Drug & Alcohol Services

SEPT provides substance dependency treatment services via our Community Drug and Alcohol Service (CDAS) teams. These services are provided in partnership with our Drug and Alcohol Action Team partners in Southend and Essex. Our multi-disciplinary teams are comprised of Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers and Counsellors.

Criteria/ Eligibility:
Services are available for people aged 18 years and older in the Local Authority areas in South Essex covered by Southend Borough Council and Essex County Council. The services are primarily for people with Opiate (heroin)/Crack addictions and people physically dependent on Alcohol.

• people under 18 years of age - these clients are covered by the Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Team for the relevant Local Authority area or by CAMHS

Interventions that may be provided:
• comprehensive assessment and recovery care planning
• 1:1 support and care co-ordination
• advice and information
• stabilisation
• counselling and relapse prevention
• motivational interviewing
• community detoxification
• support for service users, relatives and carers
• substitute prescribing for opiate addiction
• assessments for residential detoxification and rehabilitation
• pre-sentence reports and liaison with criminal justice services for those who have drug or alcohol related offences
• liaison with GPs, hospitals and rehabilitation units
• Hepatitis B vaccinations and Hepatitis C testing and referral to treatment  
• facilitation of rehabilitation
• care management

• to promote recovery from addiction and enable achievement of individual goals
• to assist the individual to remain healthy, until, with appropriate support, he or she can achieve a drug-free life
• to stabilise the service users where appropriate, on substitute medication to alleviate withdrawal and to reduce craving
• to reduce the use of illicit or non-prescribed drugs
• to reduce problems related to drug misuse, including health, social, psychological and legal problems
• to reduce the dangers associated with drug misuse, including the risks of HIV, hepatitis B and c and other blood-borne infections and the risks of drug-related death

The services have an open referral system.
